INTRODUCTION Demand for accountants in the United States (U.S.) and other developed nations remains high despite the current economic slowdown. Although many had predicted that in the U.S. the Sarbanes-Oxley-fueled surge was temporary, demand continued to grow through early 2008 and remains strong in 2009 (e.g., Byrt, 2007; Feldman, 2009; Simanoff, 2008). A further sign of demand at the entry level, planned intern hiring by the Big Four remained at or exceeded 2007 levels (Simanoff, 2008). A combination of factors including a robust international job market, growth in businesses, raised level of concern placed on compliance and governance, and retirement of baby boomers has created an international shortage of accountants and resultant increased demand. Also cited are increases in complexity of accounting and reporting rules as well as corporate governance and risk management requirements forcing accounting firms and their clients to seek additional staff to ensure that all rules and requirements are met (Feldman, 2009; PricewaterhouseCoopers, 2007).
